Comic

Big Active artist and self-publishing obsessive Jody Barton has got another new pamphlet out this week. It’s a strange comic book called just COMIC. Featuring two people and an animal who love a good laugh. The book is increasingly hysterical in tone. You know when you can’t stop laughing and it starts to feel a bit frightening? It’s hysterical kids! Available from SOMA Gallery Bristol and Concrete Hermit London. Just £2 of your lunch money.

Beyond Shapes And Patterns

This months iDN Magazine features an interview with Siggi Eggertsson as part of it’s special geometric graphics theme. Of course Siggi is the first to admit “Grids and geometry are the glue that holds my work together. It keeps everything in order…”, but he’s naturally dismissive of being pigeon holed as part of a wider graphic trend “I’m more interested in creating work, geometric or not, than sitting down to think how it differs from other types of design”. Smooth words indeed – good design is about thinking outside the box rather than worrying about all the boxes to tick.

The End Of The World (Quite Possibly)

‘Fuckin’ Hell It’s Fuckin’ Fucked is a limited edition A5 zine written and illustrated by Big Active artist Jody Barton. He says: “…it’s a simultaneous cry for help and call to arms, a despairing look at the language of the climate change debate…”. It’s got 32 pages of illustrations and pithy one-liners that try to undermine, incense and annoy – all the while secretly being slightly informative. And it’s got a lovely silver cover. Not available for sale in any shop at present.

Jasper Goodall Speaks To Varoom

This month’s excellent Varoom magazine features Jasper Goodall in conversation with John Vernon Lord, Paul Burgess and Jim Stoten. All four image makers share a common interest in having taught illustration at the University of Brighton. They chat about their views on contemporary illustration, art education and professional life in a wide ranging discussion that also asks why illustrators have a fondness for beards – well these four at any rate! Jasper also created the provocative cover image for the issue. ‘Tigress’ is a work in progress and part of a series of images exploring fantasy – the intention being that the final image is output on transparent film and photographed whilst held up in front of a model. ‘Evil Mickey’ is another image from the series and accompanies the feature. The full interview is available at www.varoom-mag.com

Defected In The House

We want to welcome on board Simon Dunmore’s Defected Records label as a new client. Over the coming months we will be overseeing all aspects of their branding and identity, with a view developing a robust visual approach for today’s fragmented music market. So a big shout to Kieran Mansfield and his team – we look forward to working with you all. Above is the new updated logo we have created.
