Images For The People

DigitallyIsolated

You may remember that earlier this year we collaborated with Berlin based artist Andreas Nicolas Fischer to create the design for The Enemy’s ‘Music For The People’ album. Andreas has been busy developing more images in this series for his new solo exhibition “Lichtzeichnungen” which opens on October 23rd at the Galerie im Medienhaven in Bremen. To create the work Andreas has developed a program to explore his technique, “All the drawings from that series are based on this program” he says, “Every time I run the program, I let it generate a couple of drawings and I decide which parameters should be altered. This means that every “final” drawing has gone through hundreds iterations of program code. For every finished computer drawings there were hundreds of predecessors. What I find interesting is the “autonomy” of the software, which can make decisions and thus create results which I cannot anticipate”. You can see more of the exhibition here.

Destroy/Rankin Auction

To mark the climax of this year’s Youth Music Week, the Phillips De Pury Gallery in London auctioned 25 of the original artworks produced for the Destroy/Rankin project. First under the hammer was Mat Maitland’s’s work for Basement Jaxx which fetched the respectable sum of £800. Other key works included Damien Hirst’s ‘Joe Strummer’ and artwork by by Debbie Harry, Kylie Minogue, Mat Collishaw, Douglas Gordon and Mariianne Faithfull. The evening’s entertainment also included an exclusive performance by Jarvis Cocker and a DJ set by Lemon Jelly’s Fred Deakin. The night raised a total of £50,000 to benefit Youth Music projects. Destroy/Rankin designed by Big Active’s Gerard Saint is available from bookstores with all proceeds also going to the youth charity.

Siggi Eggertsson gets down with the kids

Posted by Siggi Eggertsson

Over the last few days I’ve been doing some teaching workshops in Berlin. On Friday I was sitting at the end of the table, with 16 students around me. I asked them to draw me from their perspective in whatever style they wanted to. This was the outcome.

Mimi Leung Pushing The Envelope

Posted by Mimi Leung

I painted this for Pushing The Envelope, a charity campaign to raise money for the National Literacy Trust. The theme was ‘words that mean most to me’. Lots of TV celebrities, pop stars and ‘real’ artists (like Grayson Perry) supplied customised envelopes which were auctioned on Ebay. My envelope was at £310 last I checked about 30mins before the end of the auction. The Auction ended up raising an impressive £14,459.65 for the Trust.

Kate Gibb Midcentury Modern

Posted by Kate Gibb
This Sunday, November 15th, myself and James Brown will be presenting our wares at Midcentury Modern, housed at the Imperial College, Dulwich. In preparation for this I’ve been working on a host of new editions. Whilst experiencing the usual technical & creative hiccups along the way, I’ve learnt to see the beauty in these creative blips. Not only do I end up with an even more limited edition, the dwindling numbers have created a curious collection of ‘one-off’ test prints. It would seem apparent that however hard I try to produce silkscreens in multiples, my intuition to make something individual, unique even, is far too strong. The show will feature four new silkscreen Editions, here’s a sneak preview. Please come along and say hello.

Jody Barton X-Felt Copenhagen Project

Posted by Jody Barton

I was asked to do some sort of artwork to decorate the main event room in ‘Huset’, a multi-disciplinary arts space in Copenhagen. I wanted to do something to emphasise the value of voting. We take it for granted and are rightly cynical about it’s effect, but many people have risked and sometimes lost their lives fighting for democratic rights. In England for example the members of the Women’s Suffrage movement went on hunger strike and were fed by nasal tube when imprisoned for minor acts of civil disobedience like breaking windows. My three posters are to commemorate those acts. they are 2 metres by 1.4 metres and are painted by hand in one go.
