Letman Vernacular Painting
Posted by Letman
I designed the book for and with Gijs Frieling, a dutch painter and muralist. The concept of the book was to push its appearance (and particularly the typography) to be as close to Gijs’ work as possible. The result is therefore, in a good way, somewhat confusing; it is not clear where Frieling’s work ends and my work starts, and as a result it has become a book that showcases both our work. I am really pleased with the result, and very proud that it has been selected for ”The Best Dutch Book Designs 2009″, a prestigious annual design event in my native Holland. It was printed by Extrapool, who specialise in a traditional printing technique called mimeography, and published by Valiz. The book is available here.

Goldfrapp: The New Album
The new album by Goldfrapp ‘Headfirst’ is released today. Featuring the single ‘Rocket’, this is the fourth album release we have designed for the band – and marks yet another new direction in the band’s sound and imagery. The campaign has been art directed by Mat Maitland in collaboration with Alison Goldfapp – with photography by Serge Leblon, styling by Cathy Edwards, and set design by Shona Heath. BBC6 Music likened the album to ‘…the first sun of spring’ – rather appropriate we think…

Will Sweeney Them And Us
Posted by Will Sweeney
The theme given to Cameron Platter and myself was ‘Sickness & Health‘ so I decided to resurrect Helmut The Hot Dog Man to tell a short tale based on the lyrics to Macy Skipper’s classic rockabilly track, Bop Pills.
‘Them and Us’ takes 20 leading European image makers and teams them up with 20 African counterparts. Each team of two was asked to create a double sided poster in an open exchange of ideas. Both works share thinking but we are able, through the final executions, to compare and contrast African and European views and aesthetics.
The works are being exhibited in 2010 in Europe and South Africa with all proceeds going to Amnesty International.
