Mat Maitland L’Officiel

Nimbly hopping between art, fashion, photography and music, Mat Maitland has built up quite a reputation for himself over the past few years. Bold, energetic, seductive and enigmatic at the same time, his multi-layered compositions make reference to pop culture and its symbols, photorealist painters, James Rosenquist and the surrealist movement to name but a few influences.
Old 70’s and 80’s magazines, music, fashion, paintings, films, anything can nourish Maitland’s desire to create a different aesthetic. For this l’Officiel editorial, he has completely eradicated the traditional barriers that usually separate fashion from other worlds. Shoes and bags from the spring 2010 collections are juxtaposed with disembodied body parts or animals, pianos, clouds and glossy pop symbols to create an element of surprise and the unknown. Audacious and abstract in spirit, his work for l’Officiel is a powerful and addictive experience. See the whole story in the December/January issue of l’Officiel, out now.
